The hot-button issue of tariffs has everyone on the edge of their seat including some disgruntled government agencies. In opposition to the tariffs, the Chamber of Commerce published data showing the impact of tariffs on the different states in the country. Updates on the U.S.-China trade negotiations have been progressing, but reporting on that progress has been far from transparent. On April 8th, 2019, the Congressional Research Service published a short report on "U.S.-China Trade Issues." The report continues to nail down the reasons why the economic squabble continues between the two largest nations in the world.  President Trump has cited his desire to shrink the trade deficit between the United States and China. In 2018, that deficit reached the highest it's ever been at $419 billion. The report suggests that economists could explain a rising deficit not as an unfair trading relationship, but as a result of "low U.S. domestic savings relative to total investment." Consumption Recovery Slow Despite Massive Increase in Disposable Income

Economic Report Monitor #49 June 26th, 2020 From FxPro The week ends with a look at the report of personal income and outlays in May. On a month over month basis, personal income fell -4.2% after being boosted by stimulus checks in April. Disposable income fell with it, down -4.9%. The increase in cash from the stimulus and partial reopening of the economy allowed consumption to rise 8.2% in May. The largest bump was in durable goods consumption which grew 28.6% while services consumption was up just 5.4% and nondurable goods consumption was up 7.7%. However, inflation remains at lows from April with the general PCE price index at 0.5% and the more closely followed PCE price index (excluding food and energy) at 1.0%. YoY comparisons still put personal consumption down -9.8% despite disposable personal income up 8.2% in the same period. Here, services lag the most, down -14.3% from a year ago. Crude oil: Crude oil production continues to fall for the 9th straight week continuing to justify the recovery in prices. With a drop of 23,000 b/d, last weeks production came in at 8.802 million b/d. Further declines of 300,000 b/d over the next couple of months will put output levels at July 2014 levels. The WTI spot price was above $100 per barrel then. Stockpile data this past week has reached a potential reversal point. A decline of about 3.4 million barrels to 1.235 billion barrels marks the first draw on inventories after four straight weeks of surplus. Since the beginning of the year, 58 million barrels of crude oil have been stored away despite reductions in downstream operations. Keep an eye on stock change over the next couple weeks to see if this reversal represents a shift in crude oil fundamentals. Refinery inputs jumped by 190,000 b/d to 16.18 million b/d adding onto gains at the end of April. In fact, last week's input levels are already above the April average ...
